Smallfire padded to Highstones. He padded into the tunnel, and into the cave, filled with wonder. The currently proclaimed leader laid by the stone and fell asleep.
Smallfire opened his eyes and attempted to stand up. Nothing. He stayed like an unmoving stone. An orange she-cat with white stripes and a white chest moved up to him. He looked up and smiled. "Flyingstar!" He called out.
"Welcome, Smallfire," She mewed, "Are you ready to receive your nine lives?"
"I- I am." Smallstar now felt cold, and began to feel life-less. What is happening to me?
Flyingstar stepped away. "My work here is done." She flicked her tail, and nine more starry cats came to him. "Come now."
A brown tom with amber eyes walked up to him.
"With this life, I give you faith. Use it when you and your Clan need something to believe in." Tallstreak stepped forward and touched Smallfire on the nose. The feeling was calm and soothing, as well as cold. Then at the end it hurt and felt hot. Smallfire didn't pull back, however.
Then a sandy colored she-cat with amber eyes padded up.
It was Sandbreeze, Smallfire's previous mate.
"With this life I give you justice. Use it well as you judge the actions of others." She touched his nose, and it burned. Then at the end is was calm and soothing, but then warm again just at the very end of it all.
Smallfire looked up shakily as Greenbreeze, his former friend, padded up. His white pelt was not scarred as Smallfire had once remembered him. His green eyes glittered, and he smiled.
"With this life I give you loyalty to what you know to be right. Use it to guide your Clan in times of trouble." The feeling remained warm, but not very hot, and then Smallfire saw the color of blood in front of him. So this was what it felt like as Greenbreeze had died.
Then Flickerheart, the beautiful orange she-cat came up. She was once a wise and kind medicine cat, but she was never proud. But now she was.
"With this life I give you the ability to heal mental wounds. Use it to heal a cat low in spirit." The touch was cold, and remained cold.
"With this life..." a voice whispered. Tallflower came up to him, the black and white queen smiling softly.
"Mother," Smallfire murmured. He was surprised by this. His mother had died as a deputy when he was an apprentice.
Then Tallflower repeated again, "With this life, I give you tireless energy! Use it to serve your Clan to the utmost you can do." The feeling was warm, then hot, then cold, and repeated until it was done.
"With this life I give you mentoring." Goldenfire, a sandy she-cat with green eyes, came up. "Use it well to train the young cats of your Clan." The feeling was filled with terror and defiance, and then it too ended with pain. Smallfire wanted to cringe. "Remember, StarClan is with you."
Pearlwhisker bounded from behind Goldenfire, and she purred. This she-cat was a pearly silver with ice blue eyes, and she was form OceanClan. She was Smallfire's forbidden mate that he left. He didn't want to see her again now. He thought she'd yell at him before giving her life.
But she didn't.
"With this life, I give you compassion. Use it well for the elders of your Clan, and the sick, and all those weaker than yourself." The feeling had nothing at all that was angry or anything. Just soothing.
Coppershadow came to Smallfire next. "Welcome."
He paused, and mewed, "With this life I give you sympathy. Use it towards the young and eldest of the Clan and those who need help." The feeling was calm yet angry, and a mix of feelings from understanding and defiance.
Finally, Flyingstar came again.
"Welcome, Smallfire, my warrior, my deputy. With this life I give you determination, certainty and endurance. Use it well as you lead your Clan in the ways of StarClan and the warrior code. I hail you by your new name, Smallstar. Your old life is no more. You have now received the nine lives of a leader, and StarClan grants to you the guardianship of DarkClan. Defend it well, now; care for the young and the old; honor your ancestors and traditions of the warrior code; live each life with pride and dignity." Smallfire knew this was the longest life, and felt all three feelings overcome him. It hurt, and finally at the end he managed to stand up. He felt sick now from these lives.
Then more cats came. A feeling of dread overcame Smallstar. But none came to close to him. Then they chanted.
"Smallstar! Smallstar! Smallstar! Smallstar! Smallstar! Smallstar! Smallstar! Smallstar! Smallstar! Smallstar!" They chanted.
Then Flyingstar said one last thing.
"Now go. All nine of us will walk in your dreams, don't worry. We will not abandon you forever, even in times of doubt."
Smallstar looked up at her, pain and hurt in his eyes. He didn't want to leave her now.
Smallstar opened his eyes in real life. He stood up, no medicine cat beside him, and trotted off to DarkClan again. Just outside of FireClan territory, he dashed through the Clan and to Fourtrees. Looking behind him, he left to DarkClan.
